COLLECTION OUTSIDE LIDL SATURDAY 20th DECEMBER 08 - VOLUNTEERS GREATLY APPRECIATED

COLOURTHON WALK RAISED £240

Some people thought we were nuts to be walking at 8pm at night but after the heat of the day and the rain in the morning it couldn’t have been a better time for it. The weather couldn’t have been better and there was a sea breeze that kept us cool. Heather Brown gave us a call at approx 11.45pm to wish us all the best and to see how far we had got. By this time we had just passed the 12 mile marker and were outside Westcliff URC. We crossed the line slightly before midnight vowing to do it all again next year. Kevin, Sheila and I took 4 hours to cover the 13 miles and apart from tender feet and achey limbs I don’t think anyone suffered any other side effects. There were approx 1200 walkers who took part in the circular walk from Chalkwell Park and the route extended as far as Southend Pier at one end and Tattersall Gardens at the other. Southend Round Table had volunteers at stops along the route giving encouragement and providing water. Residents around the route also waived and cheered us on. St John’s Ambulance was also in attendance for anyone who needed their assistance. Essex FM and Southend Radio had a presence in the Park and a girl from the Virgin Gym got us all doing warm up exercises before the start. Chalkwell View Tea rooms had hot food and drinks available to purchase.
